Overview
The aim of this activity is to apply pathophysiology knowledge to a clinical context. Students practice basic charting skills and conventions as well as higher cognitive level analytic elements such as prioritization and treatment planning through the creation of a fictional client “chart” based on a pathological diagnosis and a few contextual details. The intention of having students create the case is to reinforce understanding of the relationship between pathophysiological elements and a typical clinical presentation. The analytic elements come in when they are required to create a treatment plan based on the data set for the fictional client they have created and compare to those of their colleagues’ plans, in order to ensure they understand the differences in approach based on underlying pathophysiology. This exercise requires students to integrate various elements from different units of the course referencing course materials and other sources to construct a holistic understanding of their future clients in various contexts. It flips the role of teacher and student in case study method.
This activity can be done individually or be paired with Rough draft workshop: group peer assessment jigsaw activity for case study or procedural writing and Mock data collection and role play for health disciplines in-lab practice.
Instructional Objectives
- Students will correlate pathophysiology knowledge to a typical clinical presentation.
- Students will create an intervention plan according to professional scope of practice based on a client presentation and problem list/objectives.
- Students will document data collected and intervention plan according to conventions and standards. “
