In the ever growing fields of flipped learning, MOOCs, online learning, and blended learning, video is becoming one of the most prevalent methods of conveying learning objects to students of all ages. Instructors who assign online videos as part of their teaching methodology use a variety of sources including Khan Academy, YouTube, TED Talks, ED-TED, as well as recording their own lectures. However, the use of online videos as instructional tool has its limitations. Recently, new tools have emerged that allow instructors to create interactive videos in which custom questions can be embedded into these videos. Interactive video assessment tools allow instructors to embed custom integrated assessments for their assigned videos. These assessment tools allow instructors to assess content comprehension at any given time during the video presentation in such a way that students are required to answer questions successfully before they can proceed to the next sections of the video presentation. Through skillfully crafted questions and interactions, interactive video assessment tools can allow for timely formative assessment.
- Interactive Videos in Biology Flipped Instruction
I have been using the flipped learning (FL) model in my biology classes (General Biology I and General Biology II) for over 4 years. I have mostly relied on videos from YouTube and ED-TED. I have also created a limited number of my own lectures (screencasts).The feedback I continually receive from my students is that they like the videos I assign from YouTube and ED-TED, but they find my videos to be more useful for them as they point directly to what I want them to focus on in their learning. The main aim of this project is to convert online video watching, which is a requirement in my FL biology courses, from a passive activity to an active learning experience through watching and interacting with online interactive videos. I have been creating interactive screencasts for about a year now, using a free platform provided by Edpuzzle.
